Virtual reality has made a lot of big promises, but to many people it is still a novelty or a dream. Solutions like Oculus Rift or HTC Vive are expensive, finicky and still do not offer a killer app which will make people keep using it. PlayStation VR is supposed to be the solution.

PLAYSTATION VR - VR FOR EVERYBODY

PlayStation VR is the only big, tethered, virtual reality headset powered by something which lots of people already have, the PlayStation 4 gaming console.
It is cheaper than either the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive, and is backed by Sony, one of the world's greatest gaming companies. And the fact that it doesn't require a super expensive high-end PC to power it, makes it much more consumer-friendly.

DESIGN AND COMFORT

The heart of PS VR is the space-age black and white visor once known as Project Morpheus. It is by far the best looking high-end VR headset out there. It uses a completely different mechanism than the Rift or the Vive to mount onto the player's head. And due to its ergonomic design and innovative mounting technique, the PS VR headset feels the most comfortable too, despite being the heaviest of the lot. The lenses of the headset also slides out at the push of a button, and players can effortlessly use the headset while wearing glasses.

SETTING UP FOR VR

Setting up PS VR is not that difficult, and the instructions provided are quite straight forwards and easy to follow. You can set the whole thing up in 10 minutes, and immerse yourself in the world of virtual reality. Calibrating the headset is not an issue as well. The headset calibrates itself pretty quickly. Also you should know that it is possible to use Sony PS VR with you MacBook for watching 360 videos, thanks to MacMorpheus.

GRAPHICS AND DISPLAY

On paper, the PS VR headset has some disadvantages compared to the Rift and Vive. In addition to being the heaviest, it also has the lowest resolution screen among all of them. The display looks blurry compared to other high-end headsets. But that is quite expected as the headset uses one single full HD screen for both eyes, instead of separate screens for separate eyes. However the display quality, in any way, cannot be termed as 'bad'. And the displayed image quality significantly increases when the headset is used with PS4 Pro instead of regular PS4. The PS VR headset also uses a AMOLED high-refresh rate screen, which results in darker blacks, richer colors and reduced motion sickness while using the headset.

TRACKING

The PS VR needs the PlayStation Camera in order to track your movement. The headset has nine tracking LEDs, and the tracking is quite good. It doesn't match up to HTC Vive standards, but it gets the job done quite well.

CONTROLLER AND ACCESSORY

PlayStation VR also needs the PS VR Motion Controllers or the Sony Motion Controllers in order to track your hand movements, and control your actions. These are not as good as the Oculus Touch Controllers and do not include any d-pad or thumbsticks for character movement. However, at a much cheaper price, you still get to use your hands, and it increases the immersion a lot. The Move Controllers are a must buy accessory for every PS VR user. PS VR also comes with its own wired headphones and supports 3D sound, which adds up to your immersion. The bundled PlayStation VR World Compilations games are quite fun to play too. VERDICT

The PlayStation VR is by far the most affordable high-end VR headset out there. And with its solid performance, great design, and really fun experience, it has turned out to be a really solid competitor of the big names of VR world, like Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. And if you want to experience some great VR on the cheap, or just entering the world of high-end virtual reality, then the Sony PlayStation VR can be a great option for you.
